William Leiss's risk management theory,particularly the research on its ecological dimension,has attracted significant academic attention.Building on studies of occupational risks during early industrialization in the 18th and 19th centuries,technological and ecological risks in the mid-to-late 20th century,and various global risks intensified by 21st-century globalization,scholars have focused on Leiss's risk management framework and its ecological dimension.This research examines the challenges of risk management in carbon capture and storage(CCS)projects,emphasizes the critical roles of governments and industries in such storage initiatives,and underscores the importance of risk management in global ecological governance.The theory concentrates on the intrinsic relationship between risk management and ecological risk,integrating ecological principles—such as foundational logic,holistic perspective,preventative approach,adaptive capacity,and social dimensions—into risk management applications.It systematically connects the dual-edged nature of technological development,human domination over nature,the linkage between risk and technology,the interdependence within ecosystems and holistic risk management,practical challenges,socio-cultural dimensions of sustainability,environmental policy and governance frameworks,technological progress and environmental responsibility,as well as future directions and challenges.Leiss's research provides both a critical perspective and response strategies for addressing the era of global risk society.
