Pictorial Interpretation of the Rites of Zhou:A Study of the Linked-Drum Thunder God Images in Han Dynasty Pictorial Art
汉代画像中的"连鼓雷公图"描绘的是雷公手持鼓槌击打环绕四周的连鼓场景,表现形式多样,既有雷公的人形、兽形,也有方相氏形象,鼓的数量亦随场景和时代有所变化.通过结合图像学与文献资料,考辨此类图像的来源与演变,发现其形成受到谶纬思想的影响,早期功能源自周代鼓祭仪式,并在汉代图像系统中得到发展与创新.在墓室星象图中为"神祀"场景,鼓为八面;在社祭图像中为"社祭"场景,鼓为六面;在祠堂壁画中为"鬼享"场景,鼓为四面.至东汉晚期,随着图像功能的转变,该图出现在藻井中,雷公形象趋于方相氏化,连鼓数量稳定为七面,其宗教意义亦由祭祀向辟邪转化,反映出汉代多元信仰融合下图像意涵的流变.
The"Linked-Drum Thunder God Image"in Han Dynasty pictorial art depicts scenes of the Thunder God holding drumsticks and striking linked drums arranged around him.The visual representation of this image is diverse,featuring the Thunder God in anthropomorphic,zoomorphic,and Fangxiangshi-like(方相氏)forms,with the number of drums varying depending on the specific scene and period.Through a combined analysis of iconography and textual sources,this study investigates the origin and evolution of such images,and finds that their formation was influenced by apocryphal and weft-text thought.Their early function derived from the Zhou Dynasty's drum-sacrifice rituals,and they were subsequently developed and innovated within the Han Dynasty pictorial system.In tomb astral diagrams,they represent"divine sacrifice"scenes,where eight drums are depicted;in She-sacrifice images,they appear as"She sacrifice"scenes with six drums;and in ancestral hall murals,they are seen as"ghost offering"scenes with four drums.By the late Eastern Han period,as the function of these images transformed,the Thunder God began to appear in caisson ceilings.His representation gradually took on characteristics of the Fangxiangshi(方相氏),and the number of linked drums stabilized at seven.Furthermore,the religious significance of the image shifted from sacrificial rites to exorcism,reflecting the changing meanings of images under the fusion of multiple beliefs during the Han Dynasty.
