The Reconquest of Time:Supplementary Re-establishment of the Neues Museum in Berlin,Germany
The intervention of historic buildings is not only a matter of heritage conservation in the narrow sense;it also requires the integration of historical values and contemporary social needs, enabling the reflection of the design philosophy, methodological choices, and artistic intuition of the architects and conservators involved.Taking the supplementary re-establishment project of the Neues Museum in Berlin,Germany,as a case study, this article first traces the museum's his-torical background and its initial design by Frie-drich August Stüler(1800-1865).Focusing on the re-establishment of the museum's three key spaces—the Egyptian Courtyard, the Staircase Hall, and the James Simon Galerie—it further dis-cusses the vision, philosophy, and overall strategy of supplementary re-establishment.Finally,the article examines how the British architect David Chipperfield and his restoration team achieved the'reconquest of time'through their re-establishment design, exploring themes such as the restoration of overall order, the regeneration of specific mean-ings,and the spatial perception of the modern museum.
