Based on Lu Ban rulers recorded in his-torical documents and those obtained from field surveys over the past 30 years,this article differen-tiates between the official ruler and the vernacular ruler,the construction ruler and the carpenter's ruler,and the L-shaped ruler and the Lu Ban ruler.It further extracts the characteristics of the Lu Ban ruler,including its extraordinary length,mystique,authority,symbiosis,and diversity.Based pri-marily on the formats of the eight characters at cun positions(eight measurement sectors on a Lu Ban ruler),stellar designations,and verdicts of the Lu Ban ruler,the article outlines the developmental trajectory of its patterns from the prototype(the cun-position eight-character star-matching pattern)to the evolved types(the cun-position four-verdict pattern and the division-position five-verdict pat-tern),and to the differentiated and combined types.It finally explores the interrelationships between the Lu Ban ruler method and the yabai(white-star alignment)ruler method across different times and regions,thereby expanding the systematic under-standing of the relationship between the Lu Ban ruler,the official ruler,and the vernacular ruler.
