In the digital media era,whether the Internet empowers ordinary citizens politically or exacer-bates participatory inequalities remains a subject of scholarly debate.Drawing on data from the 2021 Chi-nese Social Survey(CSS),this study employs structural equation modeling to examine the mobilizing po-tential of Internet use for farmers' political participation and to elucidate the mediating role of political psychology.The findings indicate that Internet use exerts a positive effect on farmers' political participa-tion;however,the effects of two distinct usage motivations-information-oriented versus entertainment-oriented-differ significantly across two types of political participation:government-led versus public-led.Regarding the underlying logic of political psychology,affective trust in government operates through an outward-oriented emotional pathway to foster cooperative political participation,whereas in-ternalized political efficacy functions through an inward-oriented competence pathway,endowing individ-uals with a sense of"self-empowerment"to engage in diverse political activities.Mediation analyses confirm that information-oriented Internet use enhances farmers' accumulation of political psychological resources,thereby promoting orderly political participation;by contrast,entertainment-oriented use ex-hibits a corrosive effect on individual political psychology-particularly at the level of self-efficacy.These findings offer theoretical insights and practical implications for fostering farmers' orderly political participation and advancing Internet governance in the digital media era.
