It is considered that the synovium,cartilage,and bone in modern anatomy correspond to"sinews and membranes","all sinews",and"bone"in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM).The basic pathogenesis of rheuma-toid arthritis is that wind-cold-dampness pathogens transmit layer by layer from membranes to sinews,and from sinews to bones-eventually leading to disorder of the joint ecosystem.Under the guidance of TCM holism concept,this disease is treated based on the"sinews and membranes-all sinews-bone"trinity theory.When the disease located in sinews and membranes,treatment should focus on regulating qi and harmonizing blood to eliminate pathogens and nourish the membranes;when the disease involves all sinews,treatment should focus on nourishing the liver and un-blocking collaterals to relax sinews and benefit joints;when the disease invades the bone,treatment should focus on tonifying the kidney and replenishing essence to strengthen bones and prevent damage.Meanwhile,attention should be paid to harmonizing zang-fu organs,qi and blood,treating both manifestation and root cause,so as to restore the ecological balance of joints.
