The Four Evolutions of the Debate between Confucianism and Mohism in the Pre-Qin Period
儒、墨两家在战国两百余年间,先后展开四次学术论战与思想交锋.从墨子"非儒"、孟子"辟墨"到后期墨家"争彼"、荀子"解蔽",先秦儒墨之争的演变轨迹随即形成.战国初期,墨子从政治、伦理维度建构"十论"体系,批判孔子与早期儒家,成为儒墨之争的起始阶段.战国中期,孟子基于道德主体性视角,坚守孔子"仁爱"主张,反对墨子"兼爱"观念,成为儒墨之争的重要发展阶段.后期墨家"争彼"以求"辩胜",借由《墨经》归纳逻辑概念与论辩方法,将儒墨之争推向理论高峰.战国后期,荀子在稷下学宫总结百家之说,破解墨学之蔽,传续孔子仁礼之道,宣告先秦儒墨之争的正式终结.
During the more than two hundred years of the Warring States period,Confucianism and Mohism engaged in four successive academic debates and ideological confrontations.From Mozi's"Rejec-tion of Confucianism"and Mencius's"Opposition to Mohism",to the later Mohists'"Contest of Others"and Xunzi's"Dispelling Blindness",the evolutionary path of the pre-Qin Confucian-Mohist rivalry took shape.In the early Warring States period,Mozi constructed the system of the"Ten Treatises"from politi-cal and ethical dimensions,critiquing Confucius and early Confucianism,marking the initial phase of the ri-valry.In the mid-Warring States period,from perspective of moral subjectivity,Mencius upheld Confu-cius's doctrine of"benevolence"and opposed Mozi's idea of"universal love,"representing a significant de-velopmental stage of the rivalry.The later Mohists sought victory in argumentation via disputation.By em-ploying the Mo Jing to summarize logical concepts and argumentative methods,they elevated the Confu-cian-Mohist rivalry to its theoretical peak.In the late Warring States period,Xunzi synthesized the doc-trines of various schools at the Jixia Academy,unraveled the limitations of Mohist thought,and preserved Confucius's principles of benevolence and ritual,formally bringing the pre-Qin Confucian-Mohist rivalry to an end.
