Civilization is the outcome of cultural development and a general term for culture.As a con-cept,culture is more descriptive,while civilization is more symbolic.Within the same country or ethnic group,cultures can be graded as superior and inferior,but civilization more often refers to the totality of excellent cultures.The characteristics of civilization are essentially those of a culture as a whole.The differences in the characteristics of civilizations are mainly manifested in different modes of thinking and core values.Modernization is,in the final analysis,the modernization of culture,but in essence,it is the modernization of culture as a totality that is,the modernization of civilization.The characteristics of Chi-nese civilization are expressed through Chinese people's ways of thinking and core values of the culture,ultimately embodied in their cosmology,world view,social outlook,and moral values.The characteristics of Chinese civilization constitute the foundation and root of the"Chinese-style"in Chinese modernization and represent the cultural genes of Chinese-style modernization.The characteristics of Chinese civilization,through integrating external forces,namely Marxism,and promoting the innovative development and crea-tive transformation of internal resources—China's excellent traditional culture,have jointly paved the way for the Sinicization and modernization of Marxism,as well as for the unique"Chinese-style"path of modernization.
