In this paper,a comprehensive textual research was conducted on the nomenclature,original plant,scientific name identification,producing areas,collection,processing and preparation,medicinal parts,as well as properties and efficacies of Radix Cudraniae by systematically reviewing herbal works,formularies and local pharmaceutical records of successive dynasties,combined with modern and contemporary literatures.The results showed that the name"Radix Cudraniae"first appeared in Lingnan Caiyao Lu,and was later adopted by modern pharmaceutical standards.Its original plant can be traced back to The Book of Songs.Since the Tang Dynasty,the mainstream original plants have been Maclura cochinchinensis or M.tricuspidata,which is consist-ent with the sourcespecified in the 1977 edition of Pharmacopeia of the People's Republic of China.The original producing area of this herb can be traced to the Jiangnan region,and modern distribution is mainly in provinces and regions from eastern to southwestern China.In terms of collection and processing,the herb can be collected all year round,washed,sliced and dried in the sun.In ancient times,it was commonly prepared by decocting with wine or macerating in wine,while in modern times,the dried root slices are mostly used as medicinal mate-rial.Its medicinal properties have undergone evolution:from sweet and warm in the Tang Dynasty to sweet and neutral in the Qing Dynasty,and it is currently recognized as cool,bland and slightly bitter,mainly attributive to the Liver Meridian.Its main efficacies include activating blood circulation to resolve stasis,relaxing sinews and activating collaterals,clearing heat and draining dampness.In clinical application,it was originally used for tonifying deficiency in the Jin Dynasty,then gradually extended to clearing heart-fire in the Tang Dynasty,trea-ting sores and injuries in the Ming and Qing dynasties,and is now applied to diseases such as acute and chronic hepatitis and pulmonary tuberculosis.This study clarifies the medicinal history and original plant changes of Ra-dix Cudraniae,and provides literature evidence for its standardized application and in-depth research.
