An Analysis of the Positive and Negative Connotations of Internet Slang and Their Causes
This study is based on the theoretical framework of"praise and criticism connotations,"attempting to combine traditional word meaning theory with empirical analysis of online corpora to examine the emotional color differences between the original meanings and online meanings of frequently used online words in recent years, and to reveal the semantic mechanisms underlying the transformation of praise and criticism connota-tions.A random sample of 100 online terms was analyzed, comparing the emotional connotations of their original meanings and online meanings. The study explored the causes from multiple dimensions, including social psychology, communication mechanisms, ironic culture, semantic erosion, and regulatory evasion. The results showed that the proportion of terms shifting from positive or neutral to negative(68%)was significantly higher than the reverse transformation(32%).The conclusions indicate that online slang exhibits a significant tendency toward negative connotations, reflecting not only the social projection of public sentiment but also the linguistic protest and cultural reinterpretation of the mainstream discourse system by the youth demographic.
