Anorexia is a common complication after surgery for advanced gastric cancer,characterized by high inci-dence and prolonged duration.It directly leads to inadequate nutritional intake and weight loss,delays wound healing and functional recovery,impairs quality of life and prognosis,and becomes a key factor restricting postoperative recovery.The etiology involves multiple aspects,including the tumor itself,surgical trauma,gastrointestinal dysfunction,and psychologi-cal factors.Western medicine primarily relies on nutritional support,pharmacological interventions,and cause-specific treatments,but it has limitations such as drug side effects,non-curative nutritional support,insufficient targeting of multi-factorial and tumor-related anorexia,and neglect of individual differences.Professor Xia Liming,with over 30 years of clinical and research experience in oncology,bases his treatment on the classical theory of"earth being promoted when meeting with wood"from Suwen·Baoming Quanxing Lun(Plain Questions·The Discourse on Preserving Life and Shaping the Body).He proposes that postoperative anorexia results from spleen-stomach weakness impairing transportation and transformation,and liver dysfunction disrupting the free flow of qi,ultimately leading to qi stagnation.Clinically,Professor Xia employs a therapeutic strategy of"fortifying the earth and coursing wood,harmonizing qi movement".This approach emphasizes strengthening the spleen and stomach to consolidate the acquired foundation,soothing the liver to regulate qi dynamics,supplemented by methods to promote digestion,resolve stagnation,harmonize the stomach,and direct rebel-lious qi downward.This approach restores spleen-stomach function,ensures free flow of liver wood,and supports the gen-eration of qi and blood.Additionally,he tailors treatments flexibly based on the patient's constitution,symptoms,tongue,and pulse manifestations,effectively alleviating anorexia,improving prognosis,and enhancing quality of life.This demon-strates the unique advantages and clinical value of traditional Chinese medicine theory in managing postoperative complica-tions of tumors.
