Competition Between Traditional and Emerging Methods for International Pesticide Residue Assessment and Its Implications for China

Codex Alimentarius standards on Pesticide Residue are critical for safeguarding global food trade and public health security.Their formulation and revision must rely on globally recognized dietary risk assessment methods. At the 56th Session of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues(CCPR),held in September 2025,the Committee focused on deliberations concerning the proposed replacement of the International Estimated Daily Intake(IEDI)methodology with the Global Estimate of Chronic Dietary Exposure(GECDE)approach.Owing to substantial divergences among member states, the meeting ultimately decided to postpone the implementation of the new method. From the perspective of the Chinese delegation, this paper analyzes the technical characteristics and controversial focuses of the two dietary risk assessment methods, aiming to provide references for China's deeper participation in international rule-making and for improving its capacity in pesticide residue risk management.
