Halo and Anxiety:The Media Production of"Model Narratives"in Chinese Universities and Youth Responses
Universities promote outstanding students through"model narratives"to shape campus culture and showcase educational achievements. However, this meritocracy-driven publicity often diverges from the actual experiences of many students, fueling anxiety, distrust, and a sense of"internal competition"among ordinary students. When model students exhibit misconduct,it can backfire and tarnish the institution's reputation. This disconnect between official discourse and youth experiences stems from dual drivers:universities'need for image management and the pervasive influence of meritocratic culture. This leads to highly homogenized narratives that deviate from reality.Under pressure from the official"halo effect",some young students turn to social media for counter-narratives,seeking emotional resonance through deconstruction and"lying flat".This not only undermines the effectiveness of role model promotion but also intensifies young students'value confusion. Therefore, correcting the educational model in universities cannot be confined to adjusting propaganda strategies. It must fundamentally rethink the singular standard of success and focus on reshaping an authentic, inclusive growth environment.
