Spatial and Temporal Activity Patterns of Giant Pandas and Their Sympatric Animals in the Qinling Tunnel Corridor of National Highway 108

From 2015 to 2024,the spatial and temporal activity patterns of the giant pandas(Ailuropo-da melanoleuca)and its sympatric animals in the Qinling Tunnel Corridor of National Highway 108 were surveyed using the line transect and infrared camera technology.A total of 10 occurrences of gi-ant pandas(either direct sightings or traces)were recorded, with 6 on the west side of the Qinling main ridge and 4 on the east side. The transect encounter rates ranged from 0.042 to 0.208.The re-sults showed that the frequency of giant panda activities in the corridor zone presented an upward trend. The activity range of giant pandas on both sides of the Qinling Tunnel has significantly con-tracted towards the corridor, decreasing substantially from 8.7 km(2002)and 4.0 km(2012)to the current 500 m,which suggests that the activity trace points of giant pandas have remarkably moved closer to the Qinling Tunnel within the corridor zone.A total of 19 main sympatric species were recor-ded in this survey.Among them, the wild boar(Sus scrofa)exhibited the highest relative abundance(27.62),while leopard(Panthera pardus)showed the lowest(0.15).Both the giant panda and its sympatric animals exhibited higher relative abundances in deciduous broadleaf forest and mixed conifer-broadleaf forest. They mainly inhabited in the altitude range of 1800-2000 m(39.72%),followed by areas below 1800 m(32.39%),with the lowest records above 2000 m(27.89%).This study re-veals the spatial and temporal activity patterns of giant pandas and their sympatric animals in the Qin-ling Tunnel corridor zone of National Highway 108,providing a scientific data for the formulation of conservation and management strategies for giant panda corridors.
