The Impact of Animals'Activity Levels and Feeding Preferences on Landscape Plants in Environmental Enrichment:A Case Study of the Trachypithecus germaini Enclosure

开展环境丰容工作有利于提高圈养野生动物福利,在笼舍内栽植园林植物是环境丰容的重要途径之一,有助于提高动物福利及提升展示效果,然而动物的行为活跃程度和取食偏好会对笼舍中栽植的植物产生影响.为了实现馆舍中动植物的和谐共存,探究了动物行为活跃度及取食偏好对环境丰容中园林植物的影响,提出了适配动物行为活跃度及取食偏好的园林植物设计思路,为动物馆舍中环境丰容研究提供了新的视角.结果表明:环境丰容中园林植物的破坏程度与动物取食偏好密切相关,印支银叶猴喜食度高的丛生鱼尾葵(Caryota sympetala Gagnep.)、赤苞花(Megaskepasma erythrochlamys Lindau)、朱蕉[Cordyline fruticosa(L.)A.Chev.]、散尾葵[Dypsis lutescens(H.Wendl.)Beentje&Dransf.]和喜食度较高的喜花草(Eranthemum pulchellum Andrews)、叉花草[Strobilanthes hamiltoniana(Steud.)Bosser&Heine]均被严重破坏.环境丰容中园林植物的破坏程度与动物行为活跃度密切相关,印支银叶猴活跃度高的区域内园林植物存活率和破坏率分别为71.4%和60.7%,活跃度低的区域内园林植物存活率和破坏率分别为100%和10.0%.基于印支银叶猴行为活跃度及取食偏好和园林植物生存情况,提出了印支银叶猴馆舍环境丰容中园林植物的种植建议:广东万年青(Aglaonema mode-stum Schott ex Engl.)和蜘蛛抱蛋(Aspidistra elatior Blume)适合种植在印支银叶猴馆舍,赤苞花、花叶艳山姜(Alpinia zerumbet'Variega-ta')、大叶仙茅[Curculigo capitulata(Lour.)Kuntze]和绿叶朱蕉[Cordyline fruticosa(L.)Goepp.cv.'Ti']适合种植在印支银叶猴馆舍中动物活跃度低的区域内,丛生鱼尾葵、散尾葵、喜花草、朱蕉和叉花草不适合种在印支银叶猴馆舍.基于动物行为学,可根据动物行为活跃度及取食偏好对动物馆舍进行科学丰容设计,实现动植物和谐共存,显著提高动物福利.

Implementing environmental enrichment practices helps improve the welfare of captive wildlife.Planting landscape plants in enclo-sures is one of the key approaches to environmental enrichment,contributing to enhanced animal welfare and better exhibit quality.However,the activity levels and feeding preferences of animals may impact the plants within their enclosures.To achieve harmonious coexistence be-tween flora and fauna in zoo exhibits,this study investigates the impact of animal activity levels and feeding preferences on landscape plants in environmental enrichment.It proposes design principles for landscape plants that accommodate animal behavioral patterns,offering a new per-spective for environmental enrichment research in animal enclosures.Findings reveal that the degree of plant damage in environmental enrich-ment is closely correlated with animals'feeding preferences.For instance,plant species highly favored by Trachypithecus germaini,such as Caryota sympetala,Megaskepasma erythrochlamys,Cordyline fruticosa,and Dypsis lutescens,exhibited severe damage.Moderately favored species like Eranthemum pulchellum and Strobilanthes hamiltoniana also sustained significant harm.Additionally,the degree of plant damage in environmental enrichment strongly correlates with animal activity patterns.In high-activity zones of Trachypithecus germaini,landscape plants showed a survival rate of 71.4%and a damage rate of 60.7%,whereas in low-activity zones,survival and damage rates were 100%and 10%,respectively.Based on the activity levels and feeding preferences of Trachypithecus germaini and survival status of landscape plants,the planting recommendations for landscape plants in environmental enrichment within Trachypithecus germaini enclosures have been provided:Recommended species for general planting:Aglaonema modestum and Aspidistra elatior.Suitable for low-activity zones:Megaskepasma erythro-chlamys,Alpinia zerumbet'Variegata',Curculigo capitulata,and Cordyline fruticosa.Unsuitable species:Caryota sympetala,Dypsis lutes-cens,Eranthemum pulchellum,Cordyline fruticosa,and Strobilanthes hamiltoniana.Guided by ethology,scientific enrichment design for zoo enclosures can be developed according to animals'activity levels and feeding preferences,achieving harmonious coexistence between flora and fauna while significantly enhancing animal welfare.
