The"estrangement"between modern Chinese intellectuals and urban space,their habit of"migration"from cities to rural areas,as well as their relationship of both division and dependence with modern cities and traditional rural societies,jointly constitute the writing characteristics of urban-rural narratives in the intellectual novels of the May Fourth period.The rural crisis that broke out within the main body of intellectuals during the May Fourth period constituted the main cultural driving force for the urban-rural narratives in the works of writers during this period.As intellectuals born from the traditional literati class,on the one hand,modern writers face a sense of unfamiliarity in modern urban spaces and are constantly trapped in"spatial anxiety";On the other hand,they hope to return to their hometown and the spiritual pure land of the people.However,the familiar rural society is no longer able to accommodate their new value practices,thus falling into a dilemma of retreat in their hometown.The special presentation of urban-rural narratives during the May Fourth period is the hidden leakage of its subject crisis and the modern transformation of intellectual values in literary creation.
