The emergence of Dunhuang Ci provides a significant reference and variable for the re-evaluation and reshaping of our understanding of ancient Chinese Ci metrics and Ci metrical history,and its value being far from negligible.From the perspective of tune patterns of Ci,the metrical types of Dunhuang Ci can be roughly categorized into three classes:those with relatively minor variations,those with substantial variations,and those with moderate variations.The metrical styles not only differ among these three categories but also often vary within each category.The metrical characteristics of Dunhuang Ci are primarily manifested in two aspects:first,the type with substantial metric variation is the mainstream among the three;second,even the type with relatively minor metric variation often exhibits greater internal divergence compared to transmitted Ci poems of the same tune pattern.Of course,these characteristics do not imply that the metrics of Dunhuang Ci are entirely rule-free,transforming it into a literary form allowing free improvisation.Otherwise,whether so-called Dunhuang Ci can still be classified as Ci would be highly debatable.
