Comparison of Historic District Landscape Renewal and Cultural Regeneration from a Collaborative Perspective:Cases of Singapore and Harbin

Against the backdrop of globalization and fast-paced cultural consumption, historical districts generally face the problems of homogenized expression and weakened locality.Landscape is the spatial carrier of cultural context, and its renewal often steps into the trap of"formal restoration",neglecting the co-existence between the residents and the space. In view of this phenomenon, this paper compared the conservation and renewal paths of historical districts in Singapore and Harbin, from a cross-cultural perspective, aiming to explore the mechanisms and conditions that enable the local self-regeneration of the historical districts from a cross-cultural perspective. The paper used literature review, case analysis, field observation and relevant theories to obtain the similarities and differences in the practice of these two places. The results show that Singapore establishes a stable collaborative system between the government and residents through institutional guarantee, cultural activities and communities, which takes the landscape as the active medium for cultural regeneration, making the space the archives of living culture and realizing the local regeneration of the culture. In contrast, the Chinese Baroque District in Harbin experienced significant cultural disruption due to demolition and relocation during early redevelopment, yet in its later phase, driven by cultural nodes such as Songguangli,it formed a cultural renew mechanism collaborated by the government, business and residents, stimulating the vitality of historical districts.
