Layered Narratives:A Spatiotemporal Study of the Landscape Characteristics of Shanghai Zoo

As one of China's first ten public zoos established in the post-1949 era,Shanghai Zoo holds highly academic value in its spatiotemporal evolution. This article examines historic layering of the Shanghai Zoo by focusing on the continuity of site memory alongside the functional reorgani-sation,employing the theoretical framework of the Historic Urban Landscape approach and situating it within the broader context of modern and con-temporary park development and policymaking in China. It explores the modern reinterpretations of'national form' in the zoo design and traces the transformation of its animal exhibition modes. The findings reveal that Shanghai Zoo's distinctive landscape characteristics are essentially a palimp-sest shaped by policy directives, technological advancements, and cultural translations.Through a spontaneous regeneration model of'progressive dynamic adaptation',the zoo has preserved its site memory while fulfilling multifunctional roles in education, scientific research, and recreation. This study offers references for the sustainable devel-opment of historic zoos in the urban regeneration era and provides an empirical case for the study of modern and contemporary park history in China.
