Demoralization syndrome is a state of distress in the heart of the patient caused by chronic illness or stress,with feelings of incompetence,meaninglessness,helplessness,and decreased levels of self-esteem as its main clinical manifestations.Demoralization syndrome is commonly seen in patients with cancer,advanced disease or hospice care,affecting the patient's diet and sleep,losing confidence in survival,increasing the patient's experience of suffering and raising the risk of suicide.The spread and infiltration of cancer cells and the resulting decreased immunity,reduced social functioning and poor prognosis are associated with the development of demoralization syndrome in cancer patients.Demoralization syndrome is easily overlooked by healthcare professionals and adversely affects both treatment and prognosis of the disease.It is crucial for medical staff to promptly identify the demoralization syndrome in cancer patients and intervene to improve their condition.This article reviews the concepts,assessment tools,current research status,influencing factors,and intervention strategies for the purpose of increasing awareness of the demoralization syndrome in cancer patients,with the aim of providing a reference basis for clinical research.
