'Ghosts' in the Heritage:Conservation and Rehabilitation of the Historic Building of Sala Beckett in Barcelona,Spain

The historic building of Sala Beckett in Barcelona,Spain, has a history of over a century.Although this building is not as renowned as those listed on the Barcelona Architectural Heritage List, its heritage identity and values stand out for both the city and local residents,as it is the site of a series of well-remembered historical events.Dealing with such a story-rich historic building, the partner architects Ricardo Flores and Eva Prats adopted investigations and rehabilitation methods akin to that of artisans and rarely seen in contemporary practices. This includes metic-ulous on-site documentation, entirely handmade models to explore design schemes, and hand-drawn construction drawings. As a result, the new Sala Beckett embodies a symbiotic relationship in which history and the present coexist.By tracing the building's development and analysing its her-itage values, this article highlights the architects' design strategy and investigation methods from which it derives, suggesting that this approach offers a valuable reference for the conservation and rehabilitation of other historic buildings.
