Renovation and Expansion Practices of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in the Early 20th Century:László Hudec's Campus Planning and Engineering Building Design
邬达克曾为上海交通大学的早期校园制定了改扩建规划并设计了工程馆.文章回溯了上海交通大学校园空间规划的历史脉络,在比较中外校园的基础上论述早期校园规划体现的"中心方院"式空间布局特征,以及工程馆作为早期校园内一处经典方院建筑原型的遗产价值.同时,依据历史档案及现场勘察,聚焦邬达克于1930年为校园做的扩建规划,从改扩建设计策略角度分析工程馆这一建筑作品的设计过程,探讨邬达克对既有建筑、既有环境采取的因地制宜的改扩建策略,分析邬达克对于校园方院空间及建筑类型的理解,并揭示其对今天近代校园建筑保护与更新的意义.
This article discusses László Hudec's(1893-1958)campus renovation and expan-sion planning and his design for the Engineering Building during the early development of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.It traces the historical con-text of the university's campus planning.Through a comparative perspective with both Chinese and Western campuses,the article notes the'central quadrangle'as a defining spatial feature in the early campus plan and the Engineering Building as a classical prototype of quadrangle architecture.Besides,drawing on historical archives and on-site surveys,the article focuses on Hudec's 1930 campus expansion plan and analyses the design process of the Engineering Building to summarise his renovation and expansion design strategies.It highlights Hudec's approach to adapting existing buildings and the surrounding environment and explores his understanding of quadrangle space and building types in campus planning.The find-ings suggest the relevance of Hudec's work for the contemporary conservation and regeneration of modern campus architecture.
