The impact of data quality on spatial patterns of burglary and association with built environment:A comparison between data from the Judicial Documents Website and police records
The purpose of this research is to assess the differences in spatial patterns of burglary and their association with built environment between the two data sources. The spatial distribution of burglary at subdistrict level between the police records data and the JDW data were compared.A negative binomial regression was used to examine the differences in the association between burglary and built environment between the police records data and the JDW data. The burglary data from JDW represents roughly 10%of those documented by the police.Comparing with the police records, the data quality of the JDW had a minor influence on spatial patterns, hotspot distributions, and the association between the spatial patterns of burglaries and built environment. This study provides initial confirmation of the utility of data from JDW as a viable alternative to police data.Researchers are advised to assess its potential impact on study outcomes.
